Via Verde conditions

Via Verde is an electronic toll payment system for Portuguese highways. With an electronic device placed in the vehicle, users can pass through toll booths without stopping, speeding up the process and avoiding long queues. Toll amounts are debited directly from an account linked to the device, making payment quick and convenient.

Since January 8, 2023 (with the entry into force of Decree-Law No. 84-C/2022 of December 9, 2022), it has been mandatory for car rental companies to equip all vehicles with a Via Verde device, and subscription to this service by the customer has also become mandatory.

Unlike before, when the payment of tolls and SCUT road charges was the customer’s responsibility, now the rental company is responsible for settling these charges, invoicing the customer directly.

When renting a vehicle from CARFAST, the customer will be charged a Via Verde service fee of €2.15/day at the start of the rental agreement, and a €100 deposit will be held on their credit card for toll payments.

When using the Via Verde device, all tolls passed will be automatically registered. 10 days after the end of the rental agreement, the amount corresponding to the tolls used will be debited, and the remaining deposit will be released.

If no tolls or SCUTs (toll roads) are recorded during your rental period, you will be refunded the service fee 10 days after the contract is finalized.
